What was examined?

In a recent study conducted by Hartpury University and other international partners, the pressure distribution and rein pressure of dressage horses with a snaffle bridle and double bridle were examined. The aim was to provide objective data on the effect of the noseband and headpiece on the horse - an important issue for animal welfare and equipment selection.

What was measured?

  • Pressure under the noseband (nose and jaw)
  • Pressure under the headpiece
  • Rein pressure (on both sides, in all gaits)
  • 11 dressage horses at Grand Prix level were tested.
Position of the nasal, mandibular, and occipital pressure mats and rein tension devices fitted to the snaffle bridle(A) and double bridle(B)

The most important results:

  • Nose and jaw pressure: No significant differences between snaffle and curb bit. The pressure was therefore not higher just because two bits were used.
  • Neck pressure: Higher with the curb bit, which is due to the additional weight of the equipment.
  • Rein pressure: Higher overall with the snaffle than with the curb bit - this means that double bits do not automatically lead to more tension on the horse's mouth.
Pressure scans of a single horse ridden at collected canter showing pressure on the nasal bones (upper row), mandibular rami (central row), and occipital region (lower row). Snaffle bridle scans are on the left, and double bridle scans are on the right for each site.

What does that mean for you?

This research confirms this: The pressure on the horse's head depends not only on the bridle, but above all on the fit, the rider's hand and the riding style.

Good to know for all those who use r3vobanD: The system adapts flexibly to the horse's anatomy and leaves enough leeway for the correct use of modern testing equipment, such as the new FEI measuring instrument for checking the buckling of the noseband. Our own tests and official feedback show: The r3vobanD also works reliably with it.

Conclusion: Good equipment is important - but how it is set up and used is crucial for the horse's well-being.
